A beautiful life
We think it can't happen to us.
We think that only good things happen to good people.
We think our families are blissfully safe from any harm, surrounded by the protective spell of our love.
We cling tight to these beliefs when we awaken in the dark, heart pounding and pulse racing, stricken by the worst kind of bad dream.
But these are fairy tales, made-up stories we tell ourselves to feel better.
Last week a friend lost her husband suddenly. She's now a widow with a young son. My heart breaks for her and for her sweet little boy who will never know his daddy. And I can barely breathe when I think it could easily be me in her place.
So what do we do? How do we get out of bed, get behind the wheel, drop the kids off at school knowing that danger lurks behind every corner? We can't let fear paralyze us.
But we can appreciate every moment we have. Life is precious - and sometimes way too short.
So tonight leave the laundry unfolded. Let the dishes pile up. Step away from the computer. Gather your family in your arms and kiss every inch of them, every imperfection, every quirk. And make sure that every day they know how very much they are loved.
