We have several family holiday traditions. One of our favorites that even the big kids love is to find the pickle ornament hidden on the tree on Christmas morning. I'm not quite sure the history of this tradition, but it's one I carry on from my mother.
We bought our pickle ornament, but a fun craft for the kids on Christmas Eve could be to make one out of green construction paper and yarn. The kids can't paint it or cover it in glitter.
Once everyone is awake, hide the pickle in the tree (there's no peeking!) and the first one to find it wins a prize. If it's all younger children the winner gets to open the first present. If you have mostly older kids then you might want to give the winner a small prize (a Christmas CD, DVD or ornament). Have fun!
Our family goes to church on Christmas Eve. After mass, we drive around looking at Christmas lights. When we arrive at home, the kids are so excited, because they get to open one present each (to hold them over until Christmas morning). We have posole for dinner and biscochitos for dessert. We will do the same this year, however without our dog, Snoopy, who passed away yesterday. We will miss her dearly.
We are expecting new puppies any day now and the kids have already picked out new Snoopy related names to go with Marbles and Olaf. Our dog Belle passed away this spring. Kids love keeping the Snoopy family names going with each new Beagle addition. I am very sorry for your loss. I know how hard it is to lose a member of your family.
We live next door to my parents. Every year Santa gets a little confused and leaves presents at both houses. Silly Santa. We open all our presents at our house. Then we make our way over to the Grandparent's house for lunch. The kids are always suprised to find more stuff waiting there for them.
