Hair today, a bald patch tomorrow

The wall of my shower stall has sprouted hair.

No, this isn't some bizarre type of mold taking hold in the cracks and crevices, although there is plenty of mold in there.

This hair once had a happy home on my scalp, but has since decamped for greener pastures. Or just the not so green or clean pastures of my bathroom floor.

At first it was a few strands here and there. I thought maybe I needed to apply more conditioner. Still, more bits of hair found their way onto my increasingly woolly hairbrush.

Groups of them must have banded together soon thereafter and planned an Escape from New York scenario because my shower hasn't drained properly in the past few weeks.

Now I try to trap the little baddies. Oh, there's no reattaching them; they're gone for good. Instead, I pull clumps out while I am washing and conditioning my hair and slap them on the shower wall. Let their pathetic state be a lesson to the rest of you, I say.

For the ones that escape down the drain, I keep the plunger in the shower to chase after them.

Maybe I should let them go peacefully. I can relish the memory of our time together, a time when I had long, thick hair.

Anyway.

Postnatal hair loss is apparently very common. From babyworld:

The reason for [postnatal hair loss] is that during pregnancy there is a change in the normal pattern of hair growth and hair loss, resulting in much less hair being lost than usual. At about three months after delivery, the hair follicles that have been in an extended phase of growth change to a shedding phase. The result can be a significant thinning of the hair, but no treatment is required and after another 6-9 months the usual balance of hair growth and loss is re-established. Sometimes the hair loss can be more marked in one area but bald patches do not tend to occur.

Unfortunately, nobody told my follicles about that last part.

Here's my addition to this topic.

Apparently, second to post-natal hair loss, is hair loss associated with anesthesia. Well. Nine weeks after my duaghter was born, I headed into the emergency room for gall bladder removal. Lovely. This involved two rounds of anesthesia. I really thought that I would have NO hair left.

Happy to report that everything is back to normal, though, so it does work itself out.

Another joy of mommy-hood!

Oh, Mer, I'm right there with you. Seriously, when clumps of hair slither down my back in the shower, it is so scary. Our bathtub drain is permanently clogged (we've Drano'd, de-haired, Plumber Max'ed and everything -- although I don't think we've done the Magic Foaming Pipe Snake yet). I can only take solace in that this too shall pass.
