Halloween and braces: Not a great duet
Halloween is going to be a little different this year for my middle-schooler. He has braces this year. So all those caramels, Skittles, Jolly Ranchers, Tootsie rolls - adios. (Actually, they're not so great for my crowns either!)
There are sweets we can make for them and chef Michael Ciarello has joined with the American Association of Orthodontics and put together some great recipes that are easy on the wires. You can get them at www.braces.org.
Also, check the www.star-telegram/holidays page. It has great tips for Halloween goodies and Thursday (10/30/08) on the Your Family page in the Star-Telegram, we'll be running more braces-friendly recipes. You can download those from the holiday page, too.
Here are some braces-friendly treats: (Look for foods that are soft and easy to chew)
Soft, melt in your mouth chocolate
Peanut-butter cups
Milk shakes
Gelatin
Ice cream
Peeled, thinly-sliced apples
Happy Halloween!
