How can we give back?
As the holiday season approaches and now that my daughter is getting to an age where she can understand more, I have really been looking at ways we can serve our community through volunteering. One, because I think it is our duty to serve others (esp. during the holidays when it can be tougher for some), and two, to help us remember (and teach our daughter) how truly blessed we are as a family. It also is a way to give “gifts” without spending money and creating more waste (there’s my eco-friendly personality emerging!), but also to remember the real reason for the season. Take a break from the hustle and bustle of the shopping malls, etc. and take time to be with others with your family by your side!
Here are some sites that I recently found that can help you find something that might work for you.
www.VolunteerMatch.org General resource for finding places to volunteer
www.ChristianVolunteering.org Christian resource for volunteering
www.genesisshelter.org Women’s shelter with many ways to volunteer
Check your place of worship for things you can for the community. They usually have
many things you can get involved in.
www.interfaithhousingcoalition.org They offer transitional housing for families. Can
use all kinds of volunteers.
http://apps.grassroots.org/shelter_links/199_Dallas.shtml A short list of local shelters
There are, of course, many other places to help out! If you have places to add for our resources, please add them here!
