Keeping up with your student online
At the beginning of the school year, I blogged about the new Fort Worth ISD website, http://www.fwisd.org. It certainly is an upgrade from what we've had before, however, I still don't feel completely informed as far as my child's education.
I talked with a friend whose son attends school in the Arlington school district. They have a service called InTouch. You can log on and view how your kid is doing as far as grades. Not just tests but homework assignments, too. And it links you to the e-mail of all their teachers.
Please FWISD! Look into a system like this. It would be so great, especially in the middle school years when communication is so different from the elementary school years.

Ooooh, that NISD feature sounds fantastic. In GPISD, parents can log on and see all their children's grades, too, which is a little intimidating for me as a teacher because I know I'll have to work hard to keep the online gradebook as current as possible, and I'll have to be able to explain low grades, which sometimes is hard to keep track of when you have 90 students to look after. Remembering who didn't turn in what or who wasn't participating on a certain day or who turned something in 3 days late is a large task.

My children attend NISD and they use Pinnacle software for their online gradebook. I have it set to send me emails for unexcused abscenses, zeros, missing assignments, and if their grades fall below 70. My son hates it! I have called him numerous times after school to find out why I got an email. Sometimes I know about his grades before he does. I love the emails.
