Kids and drugs: Just call me "Big Mother"
"Strawberry Quick" is methamphetamine mixed with Kool-aid (to make it look and taste better) all of this is a way to market it to younger kids. Nice!!!
Whether "Strawberry Quick" is a real problem is still debatable. One thing I do know is, the dialog has started in our house thanks to an e-mail I receieved about this new drug that is rearing it's ugly head around the country.
I don't like to worry unnecessarily so I tend to be skeptical about e-mails like this. But in this case there was a link to a FOX news article about the actual drug and others like it.
After reading the article, I searched the web and found several references including a website that debunks internet myths that led me to believe that this could indeed be true.
In Recent years another drug "Cheese" emerged. It's a mixture of Black Tar Heroin and Tylenol PM. It was created to make heroin easier to market to kids because it doesn't require the use of needles. I remember hearing about it and the many families in the DFW area that lost their children as a result.
I didn't realize how early we have to start teaching our kids about how to "just say no".
In fact, today I was surprised to see a "Join the Fight against Drugs" ribbon pinned to our daughter's shirt. She's in kindergarten!
Do we really have to start the dialog this early? I didn't hear about drugs until my sophomore year in High School and I sure didn't know how to get them.
I suppose, if I wanted to get them, I could have. Maybe the marketing wasn't as refined. I mean, how do you market Pot, Acid, Mushrooms (grown in cow manure) and Ecstasy (probably the only marketable name in the bunch).
I don't ever remember having a drug discussion (or a sex talk, different blog) with my parents. So why in the Hell was I so afraid of them? Was the "This is your Brain on Drugs Commercial really more effective than once thought?
So as my daughter's ribbon stated let's "Join the Fight against Drugs" by staying informed about our children's lives, friends and activities.
Stay on top of pop culture, language and behavior changes that "parents" might normally not be "hip" too.
Ask questions and ask them often. I would rather be known as "uncool" but know about the who, what, and when.
I've had many discussions with friends with older kids and they say the more you know the better. Maybe, Knowledge is Power, but in a good way. I pray that it might just save their lives someday.
